Post-Workshop Summary: How Thickeners Can Support Older Adults with Dysphagia

Starting in 2025, Taiwan has officially entered a “super-aged society,” with more than 20% of the population aged 65 and above—approximately one in every five individuals. According to research data, among older adults aged 65 and above in Taiwan, 21.8% experience choking at least three times per week during meals. Furthermore, approximately one in every ten older adults has been clinically assessed and identified as having dysphagia. In response to this growing health concern, the Taiwan Association of Dysphagia, in collaboration with industry partners, organized a workshop on “How Thickeners Can Support Older Adults with Dysphagia.” The aim of this workshop was to promote understanding of the importance and practical application of thickening agents in dysphagia management. The workshop invited expert speakers to provide live demonstrations and practical guidance. Through this initiative, we aimed to bring together interdisciplinary expertise and create a safer and more supportive eating environment for individuals with dysphagia.
